2001 was the bi-centenary of the world’s first self-propelled passenger vehicle designed and built in Cornwall by Richard Trevithick.
On Christmas Eve 1801 the very first trip was made through the streets of Camborne by a high-pressure steam car. As such, Cornwall can boast to have effectively produced the very first automobile!
Though the vehicles on offer from Cornwall Classic Car Hire are not quite as old, they nevertheless offer a nostalgic experience through unspoilt scenery. Wherever you travel through the county you will find clues to its rich and varied history. Whether you stumble across small fishing villages or remnants of Cornwall’s past mining boom, one cannot leave the county without feeling touched by history. Cornwall is simply an inspirational county.
As Cornwall Tourist Board describe it; ‘something magical happens when you stand on a Cornish clifftop…. picture yourself…. on a hot summer’s day, counting the waves as they shimmer and break against crystal studded cliffs... striding out, on a crisp autumn morning, over heathland and into a real Cornish pub….pausing, on a spring afternoon, to watch a fishing boat heading for a safe haven in a tiny harbour far below. Or on a brisk winter’s morning, when the sea is up, taking the cliff path from Crackington Haven, south through Boscastle and, as you round an enormous bluff, gazing upon Tintagel, court of King Arthur. You’ll be inspired.
Indeed you’ll find endless inspiration in the ancient moors, wooded river valleys, picturesque quays and secluded sandy coves. Storing up memories that will remain with you... until you return again’.
If this unspoilt county were not blessed enough, the great gardens of Cornwall adds another dimension to the region. Cornwall is the UK destination for garden lovers.
‘The climate is the key. Cornwall coils out into the warming Gulf Stream, enjoying the mild and moist conditions which allow sub-tropical species to luxuriate. Where else can equal the famed Tresco Abbey Gardens on the Isles of Scilly, the lush palms and ferns of Trebah and Glendurgan, the once dormant delight of the Lost Garden’s of Heligan, the romantic terraces of St. Michael’s Mount or the many superb National Trust estates, such as Trelissick, Trengwainton, Lanhydrock and Cotehele?
Eclipsing them all, perhaps, is the Eden Project. Stunning in its vision, it has created a vast global garden for thousands of beautiful and important plants within breathtaking, space-age conservatories’.
